Who wouldn’t be proud to wear this?
The day dawned with the steady thrum of rain against the window panes. It was time for our Walthamstow Shopping Frenzy – how apt that Mother Nature should decide to give us a downpour. I braced myself for a flurry of cancellations, but by midday there were ten Sewists gathered in Walthamstow, eagerly pinning these badges to their lapels.
I should have had more faith. When Sew, incidentally arrived with a wheeled trolley bag, I knew I was with a group of expert fabric shoppers. Midnight Bettys was wearing her walking boots (sensible girl), Diana and Me was sporting her Carly-inspired snood and Fehr Trade was wearing a pair of jeans she’d finished sewing that very morning, plus this wonderful coat. It’s awesome up close. I had serious coat envy.
Nothing was going to get between these girls and their sewing expedition. Certainly not a bit of rain.
We started at Saeed Fabrics:
My biggest concern organising this trip was that people would be underwhelmed or wouldn’t find anything to buy. I shouldn’t have worried. These new friends were mad for it! I think we all bought something in this shop.
Next stop, the stall outside Sainsburys:
More serious shopping going on. Thankfully, by now, the rain had almost subsided which meant that a rare (for Walthamstow) flourish of colour could blaze in all its glory:
Now, that’s called style.
I recognised Dolly Clackett from the moment I clapped eyes on her. Isn’t that a dream of an outfit? She and her friend, Alysa, were just as charming as I knew they would be. Plus, they brought me birthday biscuits. What’s not to like?
Further on up the market. Don’t dilly dally, there’s shopping to be done:
We squeezed in one last shop, then it was off to a pub to eat fish and chips and marvel at our seriously big haul:
Underneath all that fabric is a table.
Looks of sheer delight.
If you peer closely at this photo, you may just make out the glazed expression in these women’s eyes. Hands were trembling as fingers stroked cotton, laughter was shrill – some might say hysterical – and purses were empty. I was reluctant to let any of these Sewists near caffeine, alcohol or sugar. Would their heads spin off their shoulders with sheer, unadulterated joy? But we got through lunch with no ill event, and many a sewing tip was shared.
I think it’s safe to call the Walthamstow Shopping Frenzy a success. We’re already planning the next trip and when I have chance, there will be a Flickr group set up so that we can share our makes. My one regret is that I was too distracted to properly shop, running on nervous energy, herding my new friends from shop to stall. Next time!
I am so pleased to have met all of these fellow obsessives. Everyone was truly lovely. Thank you to:

I don’t think I’ve left anyone off, but let me know if I have. You were all superstars!
