Laura’s Handmade Life

Fancy winning these?

Now here’s an interesting insight into the power of Twitter. I’m a bit of a split-personality tweeter (@karenball). Sometimes I tweet about my sewing; sometimes I tweet under my other identity as writer and editor of children’s books. Which means I have an intriguing mixed bag of followers and people I follow.

Step into the picture an amazing piece of serendipity.

Amanda Addison (@AAhandmadelife)  started following @UndiscVoice2012 – an innovation I’m involved in. I checked out her website and was immediately blown away.

Wow, Amanda is talented. She crafts. She does textile installations at sculpture parks. She teaches creative writing. She writes novels. SHE WRITES NOVELS ABOUT CRAFTING!

Is there anything this woman can’t do? ‘Hey, Amanda! I have a quilt here that needs finishing and oh, by the way, would you mind knocking off 100,000 words of original fiction for me whilst you’re at it?’ When I die and go to heaven my name will be Amanda Addison. Or would that be too creepy? Amanda might not like it.

Anyway. She has a novel coming out!

Clearly fiction publishers have caught on to the zeit geist of crafting, and this book is being published on 21 June. Which means a publisher book launch give away today! Little Brown are being extremely generous and encouraging us all to make stuff. I’m copying in the details from the press release verbatim below. All you have to do is make a book bag.

A book bag? Pah! I know you lot could create something amazing. Me? I’m hoping to persuade Amanda to agree to a blog interview. I’m dying to find out how she wrote a novel based on my life without me even realising it! Hey, what’s that? You say I didn’t inspire the book?

Sigh. One day I’ll be someone’s muse…

To celebrate the publication of Laura’s Handmade Life, we are setting a crafty challenge, launching on April 21st. Caroline Hogg, Senior Editor at Sphere, has put together a video demonstrating how to make a very simple book bag. Following these instructions, we’d like you to make your own book bag, decorating it as you wish, and send us a picture. The author, Amanda Addison, who is a graduate from ChelseaSchool of Art, will judge all our entries and select one winner, and five runner-ups. The winner will be sent a sewing machine and a Cath Kidston sewing box, as well as a signed copy of Laura’s Handmade Life. The five runner-ups will each receive a signed copy of the book.

View the video instructions here:
