I wanted to make a little gift, so followed this tutorial to make a pencil case. I don’t want to give it away now!
The fabric is taken from a generously sized swatch from a Cath Kidston shop. The felt flower is from a kit that came with the last issue of Molly Makes. The interior is made from scraps of my rose print cotton dress, with a hidden detail of giant ric rac:
It’s all rather lovely. I wish it was mine.
I’m at the Royal Festival Hall today for a day’s writing. On the way here, I couldn’t resist stopping to be photographed with a stranger. Recognise him?
UPDATE!
Thanks to reader (aka Sew, Incidentally) advice I now know how to take a screen shot of my random number generators. Which means I can announce the winner of my button giveaway. It’s Dolly Clackett!
Very cute! What as lovely idea.
Let’s see… Miss Karen, Charlie Chaplin and the infamous Lisette. Happy writing!
What timing! I spent yesterday looking at pencil cases online and not being able to find anything that I really loved. Now I can use up some of my leftover fabrics and make myself a few instead! Thanks for posting the link!
Hurrah! Thank you!
Now I wish I needed a pencil case!
Gorgeous little pencil case. I’ve been looking for something to keep my crochet hooks in, I might just have to make myself one of these.
Love your pic with Charlie Chaplin too. The tunic/dress you’re wearing is lovely.
This is very cute. The only thing is I would be tempted to use some kind of laminated or coated fabric for the lining and maybe the exterior. That might kill my horrible sewing machine. I may have access to an industrial in a few weeks and I have a silicone foot. Maybe I’ll try this then.
It looks gorgeous, love the ric rac and flower details, many thanks for including the link to my tutorial.
Good luck with your dressmaking adventures!
Fab pencil case, love that CK fabric!!

Is there enough fabric left over for another one – it is too cute not to make again :)?
(Oh, and ta muchly for the name check hun 😉 Glad to know you can PrtSc to your heart’s content now hehe!)
My first thought was that it’s far too pretty to be a pencil case; then I wondered why pencil cases can’t be pretty? What a beautiful gift.
I will have to make one of these pencil cases. I didn’t restart sewing until I was nearly 40 but I remember my sewing lessons from school and whenever I refer to those sewing lessons I always say that I made “a pencil case and half a dress”. Now about half my wardrobe is sewn by me, but I don’t have a me-made pencil case.

So cute, Karen. Did you add a tab of fabric at each end of the zip? I didnt see that on the tutorial but it looks pretty and is probably more sturdy.
