V1179 For Christmas

I was all set to make myself a festive red dress for Christmas. The pieces are cut out and everything! But as the hours disappeared, I realised that all I really wanted to make was something comfortable for Christmas travel, over eating and cuddling little furry things.

So, out came the V1179 and some heavy rose pattern jersey I bought a few weeks ago from Classic Textiles in Walthamstow.  I squeezed this out of about 1.5 metres.

This is my fourth – yes, fourth! – rendition of this dress. It is just perfect to go with leggings and long sleeve T-shirt. Less perfect for hot dates. It’s the kind of dress a fellow woman will swoon over (recognising the comfort factor) and a man will never comment on. Whatever. Sometimes, you just need the comfort factor.

This dress is soooooo easy to make. I completed it in an evening, in between cooking dinner, chatting to my sister and taking Ella out for walks around the block. It only has three pieces – the holy grail!

Okay, are we all feeling festive yet? Are you squeezing out a few last presents or have you surrendered to inertia and a little sherry on the sofa with an afternoon film and a spot of knitting? It’s all good.

You know, you’d almost think this little dog knows exactly what a camera is…

Love this! How/where did you learn to sew? Would love to learn and make my own clothes ! Task for the future me thinks!

    • A lot of self-taught, using on line tutorials and blogs. Then Morely College and some one-on-one tuition. But initially, the online sewing community is really your friend. Go for it!

  2. Love it! I must get that pattern. Have a great Christmas

  3. sewbusylizzy says:

I never would have looked twice at that pattern to be honest – however it is now on my official must-sew for winter list! I love it. It would be perfect with leggings. Thanks for sharing (and hugs and kisses for Ella from Banjo!)

  4. Michelle says:

    That’s the PERFECT Christmas dress!

And the perfect Christmas pose with little Ella!

Merry Christmas Karen – hope it’s a wonderful time for you all. xxxx

Love how you get so much mileage out of one pattern. That’s definitely the way to go! And with the red flower brooch it’s plenty festive in a very modern sophisticated way! Never mind men’s comments. What do most of them know about dressing well? 😉

  6. That dog is a darling! And hurrah for multiples – if you know what works and what you want, this is a good thing 🙂

Have a wonderful Christmas dearest Karen xxx

oh my gosh, I’ve been lying awake on the first day of holiday debating the same thing: beautiful, flattering fitted dress out of the fabric I’d chosen for Christmas, or grey jersey dress that will be so comfy I’ll forget all about it? Jersey wins, i think. You look great!

  8. poppykettle says:

A fabulous dress with the perfect ‘accessory’ (the pooch – soo gorgeous!). I’m packing a comfortable (read: stomach-expansion-friendly) dress for Christmas too 🙂

  9. Mary says:

Terrific outfit. And yes, comfy wins every time. Will have to see about getting that pattern.

Merry Christmas from over the Pond.

  10. Anne W says:

I love our fabric, and that is the absolute perfect dress for Christmas. What a cute little doggie, Merry Christmas to you and yours!

  11. Ceri says:

I really have to make me one of those. And I could eat that dog. We have a ‘sometimes dog’. He’s a miniature schnauzer/bichon frise cross and belongs to a friend of mine. My husband and I both have hideous allergies so can’t have a dog full time, but my friend lends us her dog for regular weekends and we love him so much! We’re having him for new year. Can’t wait. Happy Christmas Karen! x

I made this about a year ago based on great internet reviews. It looked dreadful on me. I must go and get it from the UFO pile & see if anything can be done with it. Yours looks fab.

  13. Sam says:

Looks like the perfect thing for a cosy Christmas! Love the rose patterned jersey. I really must make a trip to Walthamstow soon.

I was making a Burdastyle dress for Christmas Day, but I’ve just discovered that its a big failure! I had my suspicions yesterday, and they’ve sadly just been confirmed. I really wanted a new dress for Christmas Day too!

  14. Carolyn says:

Love the fabric choice and so thrilled with your 4th version of v1179. You’re encouraging me to pull my pattern out and make a winter version for myself!

  15. You look great! I of course did not manage again to make something for X-mas… next year next chance… 😉 As all my sewing machines are back maybe I will mange to sew something for New Year … You new ‘helper’ is wonderful…

What a great dress! And Ella is too cute!

  17. twotoast says:

What a cute dress – on the model it looks rather ‘blah’, but your version is lovely. Just goes to show that the right fabric and accessories make the difference. And of course the puppy dog really makes it work!!

  18. Lucym808 says:

I’d like to see the other renditions! Gorgeous fabric though, and I love the pattern. Can’t believe for a second that it’s that easy to make with a neck like that though…

Adorable dress and adorable dog!! Merry Christmas!

  21. Marie says:

I’d love to find my very own T&T dress pattern, what a delight it must be making something you know will be a winner! And this is a winner! What a lovely jersey, so unusual and understated. I love the way you’ve styled it too and we have the same rose/bead bracelet ;o) Ella is too cute…seriously!

  22. A very accurate description! But I think we like comments from women at least as much as from men. You are stunning, Karen.

  23. Robyn says:

Amazing… this is the perfect long haul flight dress! I’m going from the UK winter to the NZ summer at the end of the month so I can leave wearing it with leggings and a long sleeve top and when I arrive, just wear the dress itself. Thank you so much for the inspiration!

  24. Tamsin W-P says:

What a perfect outfit for christmas – dressy enough, but super comfy looking too! Merry Christmas!

  25. sewexhausted says:

    o. my. goodness. how much do I love this dress? I was directed here from a photo posted on Burda of the same pattern. Here’s the thing that gets me – I have probably looked – overlooked – that pattern a million times and it never appealed to me…but worked out in the gray patterned knit – wow!!
