A few readers have commented that another Pyjama Party might be nice, and who am I to refuse? How kind of Sewaholic to bring out the perfect beginner-friendly pattern just in time! Have you seen the fantastic Tofino pattern, released today?
Hundreds of us signed up to the Pyjama Party last year. To explain to new readers, we took part in a sewalong whereby people made their own set of pyjama bottoms and shared them on an agreed date in a worldwide big reveal. PJs are great for beginners and more experienced Sewists. We had the biggest laugh! I also did a series of tutorials on making pyjama bottoms, which I’ll be repeating this year starting 3 June, using the new pattern from Sewaholic.
I love this pattern, with its cute bow and wide (read comfortable) legs. Those side panels and piping details allow for some fun fabric combinations, too. So many great decisions to make!
There’s no obligation to work from this pattern. You can make any pyjama bottoms you like – for yourself, for the kids, for partners or friends. If you like, you can even sew pieces together in the wrong order, as Four Square Walls did last year.
There ain’t no rules at a pyjama party! Well, maybe one rule…
The key date for your diary is 23 June. That’s when this year’s Pyjama Party will go live and we’ll party like our mom and dad let us stay up way past our bed time. There will, of course, be goodies to win – more on that later. There may also be an opportunity for us to Show And Tell 21st-century stylee – more on that later. And if I don’t see at least one blogger jumping up and down on their bed, I will be gravely disappointed. (Note – you don’t have to be a blogger to take part. Just email me a photo of your make.)
With thanks to Experiments and Accidents
So start dreaming about fabric, sourcing your pattern and stocking up on the popcorn. Guys, we are going to have FUN!
Hmmmmm I need new jammies…I think I may have to join in this year! Woo hoo!
Well I might just join in with this as am planning to make sons PJ bottoms but that pattern looks lovely so I might postpone their PJs and make my own
pattern and fabric ordered. Pink flowers form croft mill, very girly
Ooh yes I’m in! Whoop.. excited! And breathe… 😀
So excited I can’t spell my own name! Alice 🙂
I tested the Tofinos and boy are they beauties! Brings a whole new world of shaping to what used to be just a slouchy loose pj! Everyone should definitely sew up a pair.
My current pyjama pants are truly hideous, so I might just join in! I’m still on a sewing ban until June 18th though, so I hope I’ll find enough time…
I loved it last time, I would enjoying doing it all again.
Just realised the link to my blog is wrong here- check out the tofinos in action here http://theoldfashionedway.blogspot.com/2013/05/tofino-pants.html
Humm I will join … Maybe it will not take me 6 months to get around to making them this time!
Hmm. I have been thinking recently that my yoga pants (which I wear like pjs) need taking out and giving a decent burial. I might have to make something for myself this year! No doubt there will be some for Little One too. I seem to be making most of her pyjamas recently.
ooh, count me in! I missed out last time but just picked up this pattern and am hoping to make the shorts version for summer! fun.
Count me in – I’ve sewn a few pajamas to give as gifts, and I’ve been wanting to make a pair for me!
Didn’t ever finish my lame attempt to join in last year so think I’ll try again this year 🙂
Always read your newsletters thinking “I will make that,” but this in one thing that I will definately sew and look forward to finishing!
Ooh! I missed out last year, but I reckon I’ll join in this year as I could do with some new pajama bottoms! Hurray! Will look forward to it. 🙂
I’m in! My current pajama situation is just as bad as last years…. How does that happen? Yay!
Oooh what a great idea! Are they really ok for beginners? Like complete beginners??
I’ll be testing and making up the pattern as soon as I get my hot little hands on it (which should be soon) so I’ll be able to let you know!
Great thank you. Would love to join in. Really want to get learning on my sewing machine
I’m in! Do we get a midnight feast?!
Ain’t no party without a midnight feast! Who’s bringing the marshmallows?
Well now that I’ve ordered my fabric, I have some time to think about suitable offerings for our midnight feast… marshmallows, yes for playing fluffy bunnies!
I’m in! I missed out on the pyjama party last time, looking forward to it this time around.
Would love to join in. Will start sourcing some lovely material.
Count me in 😀 (Especially if I can find free instructions online or draft them off a pair I already own).
What great timing – I just bought some jersey on Saturday to make my very first pair of jim jams!
Brilliant news! I read all last year’s pj posts when making my first pair about a month or so ago, and since I am now starting to lose weight I should maybe give it another go. Also I know my husband would appreciate a new pair, so maybe I can stretch myself to making two pairs! And then there’s the children … Possibly biting off more pyjama bottoms that I can chew, if you get my drift.
Yep I’m totally in. PJ bottoms are on my ‘to sew’ list, and I already have the fabric and pattern.
a girl can never have too many pyjamas right, I made a cosy pair this winter, maybe we’ll get spring one day in Belgium, then I will need a lighter weight pair… looking forward to joining in this year – and I haven’t had a midnight feast since I was at boarding school, and that one went horribly wrong and we ended up throwing the pot noodles out the window!!!
I think I’ll do my best to join in. Do they have to be pjs for ourselves or do pjs for others count too?
There ain’t no rules at a pyjama party! You sew those PJs for whoever you darn well like.
Haha! Yikes. I wondered why I was getting traffic from your blog today and then when I clicked through and saw the PJ party title, I thought “Uh oh…” Sure enough, there’s me in my parachute pants! Hopefully this year I’ll sew my PJs correctly the first time, but no guarantees.
Oh man I love my Jim-Jams!
I better go order my fabric now! Spoonflower takes awhile to send to Australia =(
Oooo, fun, I’m in! I love the piping down the side of that pattern.
I’m in. I had fun doing it last year and I know I’ll enjoy it again this year.
Oh yay! I was hoping there would be a pajama party this year! I didn’t get to come last year!
Me too please! I wasn’t sewing yet when you had last year’s party. I’m off to buy the Tofino pattern!
Of course I should sign up – but I might think about it a bit more before I commit myself. On the other hand, I mean, it’s just PJ pants. I have quite a good record with those. Yeah, count me in, too. I can probably fit them in around everything else that’s going wrong!! 🙂
I’m in! And I bought a pattern for pyjama bottoms just the other day too so… I feel as though the planets are aligning and this is just *meant to be*…
Maybe I’ll join in! My husband and I happen to be making pajama pants together – it’s his first time sewing anything and he’s having fun 🙂
Hurray! Missed the party last time so look forward to joining in. Love the pattern.
If I have a bit of time at the beginning of June I hope to join in. I would like some new cuddly pyjamas – still cold here at night despite being May.
I’d love to join!
Yes please! I’m in!
Oh gosh, my pj’s pants are…. seven years old. That’s kinda gross. I’m in!
I’m in, quite fancy some PJ pants, think I’ll try making my own pattern from an old fav. pair of linen trousers.
OMG I was too shy last year to participate….and regret it enormously…. Please count me in. I will try to have my blog up and running by then (I am just too slow on that!) I sure will love to do some PJ’s, but mostly the fun of the party!
I missed last years sew along but definitely count me in this year.
Yeah! I’m so excited! I didn’t know about your blog last year until you did the pajama party.
I’m in, I’m in!!!! Didn’t manage it last year on account of the fact that my child (aka The Tiny Despot) decided sleep was for wimps, and operating a sewing maching on about 2 hours sleep a night was utterly beyond me. I don’t own any pyjamas at all that fit (am also blaming that on the Tiny Despot, since I’m currently sporting an extra 2 stone that never used to be there… it’s easier to make new pyjamas than lose the weight, no?!), so this will be a great opportunity for lovely new ones – thanks Karen!
I reckon I’m in 🙂
Awesome. I’m in!
Ohhhh!! Treasure pocket pants for grown ups!!! and PJs!!! YES!!!! 😉
You know I’m in. Have you got my emails?
Yes I’m in too! I basically live in my pj pants when I don’t have to leave home so it’s about time I make some myself 🙂
Me too please! I love pj bottoms and all of mine seem to be Christmasy. Not that I don’t love having prancing reindeers on my booty, but perhaps flowers or summer themes should be in order!
How fun. I’m in!
How cute, what a fun idea! Can’t wait to see all the fun PJ pants. : )
I wasn’t able to join in last year, so I definitely want to participate this year.
YES!! I bought a bunch of fabric to make PJ pants for myself a few months ago and have been putting it off for more exciting projects-this is just what I needed to motivate me to make them! And that picture of Andrea cracked me up the first time I saw it, and it cracked me up again this morning- so thanks for that. “There ain’t no rules at a pyjama party!” awesome.
Yes! So excited!
Yes! Once more with feeling! =)
I am in and anxiously awaiting my Tofino pattern!
Sounds like fun! Was just thinking I wanted to make some PJs for summer …
Count me in! I missed last year’s party since I wasn’t sewing yet. I’ve already ordered the Tofino pattern, and I have an idea for a fabric design to print on Spoonflower. Hopefully it gets here in time. I better get designing!
Awesome!!!! I’m marking my calendar!!!
I have never made pj’s but have been itching to make some. I am in
I found your blog during the pyjama party last year, but not in time to join in. I’m so in this time! I need some more cozy PJs! and I’m ridonkulously excited to make up the Torfino ones, as Sewaholic patterns are just so awesome! yaaayyyy!
I am totally in for this, I only discovered the sewing blogosphere this time last year so missed the last one! Super fun, I have so many ideas!
I want to join. It would be the first time I ever did anything like this. I found Sewaholic when I was making my daughter’s prom dress. I am in the mood to sew clothing once again. I have the material already for the Torfino pants and am going to order the pattern tonight. Let me know what to do next.
FUNNNNNNN! I live in pyjamas!
Yes please – I recently finally got round to adapting the unisex pattern I’d been using to make it slightly more ladylike (flat fronted!). Time to make some more PJs so I can phase out those baggy fronted unisex makes….. Thanks for organising again.
Pyjama Party should become The Official Annual Blogger event! I am so in 😉
I like this pattern and the idea of joining a sewing event. And who couldn’t use a new pair (or two) of cute pajama/lounge pants?
As soon as I saw this pattern I fell iin love!!! I’m sure in!
I’ve had some flannel and a pattern waiting around for months now so I’d better join in! Of course it’s not exactly flannel weather anymore over here in the Mid-Atlantic US so I might have to get a few yards of seersucker or something too!
Count me in for my first ever sew-along. I already have a pattern that I have made before so I will use that one again with a few alterations to make sure it actually fits this time. Also will turn it into shorts since it’s summertime.
I shouldn’t buy any new pattern, but… I’m in!
I’m totally in!!! I can’t wait….
How do you get into the party and share your pictures? I’m teaching my 10-year-old granddaughters how to sew, and their first garment will be, of course, pajama pants. Home-ec has vanished from our schools. How much fun would it be for kids like this to get some reinforcement that sewing is a respected skill than to see their creations in a blog? Thanks in advance.
You can email me photos at didyoumakethat[at]fastmail[dot]fm. So glad you’re getting involved!
Hmmmm, Karen, if I join in will that fulfil my Sewlution (as a beginner I said I would do a simple beginner pattern of yours or your reader’s choices)? If it’s really truly beginner might I be able to do it, fulfil my Sewlution and then have a party in my honour (ok ok I know it’s really just a pyjama party but I can dream can’t I?!)
Yayayayayayayayay!!!!!!!! So soooo happy you’re doing another pajama party! I’ve been keeping my fingers crossed that you would, as I need some new pj’s and have been needing an excuse to prioritise them in my sewing queue. 😉 Right, off to hunt out some fabric now…. Hmmm…..
You have the best ideas – please count me in (even though my Sewlution progress is paltry). I could do with a fun, easy project and I need new pjs! My favourite blog photo ever was Winnie’s pj post last year 🙂
I’m in!

This sounds like such fun! Going to start looking for my pattern and fabric this weekend. I did a post last year on upcycling sheets to pajamas (and they came out cute and comfy) but this time I am heading straight to the fabric store! This is a great idea! Thanks!
Sounds like fun! I’m in 🙂
missalliemass.blogspot.com
I ordered the pattern as soon as the post went up (with another couple jumped into the basket) so I think I’m in – was looking for flannel, but might change my mind.
I might just join you! My very first wearable item was a pair of pajama pants that I made in a sewing class.. One can never have too many pairs of PJ pants, I think. I won’t be using the Sewaholic pattern (I don’t think I’ll get it in time). So I may use the pattern from that class (probably will make them a bit smaller, too!)
Ooh I missed out last year but I’ll try to get in on it this year. Should be fun right?? 🙂
Yep, I’m in. I tried a pair of PJ pants about a year ago, and they were a mess. Way too much material in front, etc. From the description, this pattern will solve many of my issues. Now maybe I can make properly fitting pj’s for my daughter and myself!
I was just recently thinking it would be so fun to do another PJ party, yay! I’m in desperate need of comfy PJs, too 🙂 Count me in!
I am so excited that you are doing this again, I loved participating in the pyjama party last year and this pattern is lovely…count me in!
Count me in please – I’ve had PJ fabric sitting in my sewing basket for, ooh, must be nigh on 3 years now, so pyjama making is well overdue 🙂
Oh I’m in too. Made myself a pair of PJ bottoms last year and I’ve been promising hubby that I’d make him a pair. Perfect opportunity, thanks.

Well, this looks like the perfect second project for me. I am truly a beginner, and just finished a beginner sewing class at my local fabric store, and was looking for a new, easy project, to keep going. I have just ordered the pattern, and will drop by the store this week to look at fabric. I believe I will buy the piping already made. I don’t want to overwhelm myself. I am excited!
Super fun idea, I’m in! I’ve got a 70s workout gear pattern I’d love to make into jammies.

my dd with her bigollong legs could use some pretty pj bottoms. great idea for fun challenge <3 😀

Hi Karen, I’ve just cut out my pyjama pattern (not a Tofino I’m afraid because I won’t have time to get my hands on it)… !! I started feeling all enthusiastic and was hunting around your blog to try to find last year’s post with pics of all the pjs that people produced. I couldn’t find it though – I’d love to see them… I’m just wondering if there is a post where all the photos are lurking?!
You’ll have to do a lot of clicking through, but people posted links to their pyjamas in the comments here: http://didyoumakethat.wordpress.com/2012/04/28/pyjama-party-goes-live/
Fab! Thanks, I will get clicking!
Really want to do this. If you are going live on 23 June, when will I actually be wearing them? Will they be ready for me to wear after an ordinary human/non virtual party on 6 July for example?
Oh yes! The plan is for us all to have finished pyjama bottoms by 23 June!
Blimey! Do you mean I should have ordered the pattern, fabric, elastic etc by now? Realistically am I going to be able to catch up if I order it now? Can I buy the pattern at John Lewis oxford Street?
Sent from Samsung Mobile
I don’t think John Lewis stocks the pattern, but you could buy it online from The Village Haberdashery. I’ve given us a roomy schedule, so if you apply yourself you could totally catch up!
Sorry I don’t understand. I have never done a sewalong before. Is lesson one piping or am I missing something?
Sent from Samsung Mobile
Yes I’m in too!
A little late, but better late then never! Now I just need to start sewing my pyjamas this week!
