Thank you all so much for your enthusiastic reaction to the Sporty Summer Sewathon. It’s put a rocket up my behind and no mistake. This week I cycled 36 miles and walked 28 miles! I think that’s called an improvement.
I’ve even ordered a pattern for cycling culottes and am waiting impatiently for the below to arrive from Canada:
Some readers asked for a blog button for their sidebar. Ask and ye shall receive! Just copy the below code and paste it into a text widget in your sidebar:

<div align="center"><a href="http://didyoumakethat.com/2014/05/18/sporty-summer-sewathon/" title="didyoumakethat"><img src="http://didyoumakethat.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/sss-button.jpg" alt="didyoumakethat" style="border:none;" /></a></div>
Now, the prizes! Four very special people have agreed to supply some awesome prizes for whoever I choose as the most impressive participant in the Sporty Summer Sewathon. Impressive could mean anything – I am notoriously subject to whim – so don’t over think this. Just have fun! The prizes are:
- Your choice of a sportswear pattern from Melissa of Fehr Trade. Have you heard about Melissa’s own Spring Race Challenge? If you’re looking for race motivation and want to share a hard-won medal, this is definitely the competition for you! Melissa and Iย even share the same deadline of 6 July. So you could make this a double whammie, entering two competitions at the same time. Huzzah!
- A ยฃ25 gift voucher from The Village Haberdashery. I am a big fan of this shop and Annie stocks the most gorgeous fabrics.
- A copy of The Colette Guide to Sewing Knits (print or ebook, the winner’s choice). Written to help us embrace the beautiful and the comfortable, this book would be perfect for activewear inspiration!
- There will also be a second prize, which will beย a hamper of goodies from Minerva Crafts.
So, does that sound like enough inspiration? Heart beating faster?ย Tell me what you’re planning!
I’m so totally up for this if I can find a 70s tennis outfit pattern like your original post. I see some vintage pattern scouring in the coming days!
Bikini in the planning! The impressive bit will be whether or not I am brave enough for photos!!!
Ooh, what’s the pattern?
Those culottes are cute! What a great idea for cycling.
But as the papers recently said, we’re a nation of sport spectators rather than sport players. So I will be watching you all from the sideline, cheering on and living vicariously through all your fabulously sporty makes sweat free! ๐
Culottes sound like a good idea – I’ve wanted to draft my own ever since I came across a very good tutorial on petitmainsauvage’s blog. Now might be the time!
I’m going for an exercise class outfit… cloned cropped leggings and an independent pattern designed top. Yes, holding my cards close to my chest but there’s some good prizes so I have to keep my ideas under-wraps untill the big reveal!
OMG, I’m seeing Olivia Newton John. Say it is so!
I bought some poplin to match a golf sweater I have. Using a KwikSew skirt pattern. But I also have a nice piece of Lily Pulitzer, just enough for another skirt.
That should have been skort. I forgot to deal with spell check.
I plan on Fehrtrade’s XYT workout top for yoga class. Can’t wait to get started!
This sewalong is a really great idea!
On my list: a couple of work out tanks reusing some unused t-shirts, and some new 3/4 length knit pants to play slowpitch in. Maybe some more work out shorts too. Thanks for the motivation!
I picked myself up a leotard pattern and had my first attempt today…scarily comfortable, I’ve got some great ideas of what to do with it. I need so much sportswear!
Ooh, leotard!
With leopard print arms ๐ it’s so comfy, I don’t want to take it off!
wow – your sporty tally for this week is truly impressive! Just make sure all that walking and cycling doesn’t keep you away from your sewing machine!
I’m still undecided with regards to patterns. But I’ll be off to the fabric market tomorrow, maybe inspiration strikes via a gorgeous fabric.
You are making it very hard no to join in. I am thinking a pair of shorts. Cynthia Rowley pattern. Not sure on fabric yet . ๐๐
Join in!!!!
A great sewalong – I’m thinking leggings for the gym or copy you for cycling culottes – is that allowed? BTW I went to Walthamstow market today and PHEW what a relief as TMOS is back. He just went for a break to Turkey and promises he is not retiring any time soon. Actually Karen I think I saw you – were you wearing stripy leggings and did you have your little dog with you? I was too shy to speak as I wasn’t sure if it was really you.
Aaaah awesome!!! I’ve just made the three new Papercut patterns – trousers for pilates, a top for running, and a swimsuit. Yay! ๐ (I hope those count?)
Bring back culottes!
I really really want to join in and make some workout tops! Or perhaps some kind of belt to hold all my stuff when I exercise like keys/phone etc. Would those count? Just waiting for my university deadline to pass and then I’m on it!
I love seeing women riding their bikes in skirts and dresses (and culottes) ! I think it looks fantastic.
I’m hoping to make some yoga pants. One’s that actually fit me in the leg instead of having 3 inches hanging below my feet ๐
Ali xx

I’m in! I’m going to crack my sewing nemesis (trousers) by making some long shorts for cycling in Cornwall this September. I’ve yet to find a pattern that gets anywhere close to fitting, so I’m going to sacrifice a pair of much loved shorts and see if I can make a copy. Yelp – wish me luck!!
I’m planning to make my first ever bathing suit with fabric I’ve been stashing forever. This is also the summer that I re-learn how to ride a bicycle, so I see some cycling shorts in my future! I’ve lost 150 pounds and I’m determined to drop the other 40 so I can hit goal! ๐
completed yoga pants from Burda! I’ll post the article in the next days!Thank you for this exciting opportunity and marvellous prices!
