Mind-Blowing Made Up

I don’t mind admitting, I’m a little underwhelmed by the reaction to the Made Up Initiative. It’s only taken you 48 HOURS to blow our goal out of the water. Two days to raise £1000, when the deadline was four weeks. I can’t wait to see what else we’re capable of achieving, and now I have to hastily reassess how best to use my mini-goals and incentives! Talk about a super-achieving and generous bunch. And people have been noticing…

The Bookseller

We’ve been retweeted by the NLT, Guardian writers, by NIACE, and the Sewing Directory. What are people pledging to make? Included in the 104 pledges are a bikini, a galaxy print shirt, a unicorn blouse, PE shorts, jeans, pyjamas, a baby quilt… The list goes on and is inspiring. I’ve started my own work on the Vogue 5098 dress, but am really struggling to settle on a fabric choice.

The first sentence sounds like you’re a bit disappointed – but of course we know what you meant 🙂

    Great. Good cause. I’ve donated.

  3. I’ve donated because I love to read and always had my head in a book as a child but I’m more likely to be found now with my head in a sewing blog!

  4. You’ve combined two things many of us love, of course it’s going fantastically. Well done 🙂

  5. Congratulations! So fabulous! I’d love to set something like this up when I’m back in Australia for the National Indigenous Literacy Program…. wonderful and so pleased people are taking notice!

  6. Mags says:

Congratulations. It is a great idea. I started reading the pledges but there were so many! It is so wonderful to see the sewing community pulling together and it’s great to see donations from all over the world. I’m making jeans for my pledge.

  7. Pennie Roberts says:

Having pledged to finish my top, I spent yesterday learning how to do a whip and roll hem. Who’d have thought! Looks great and just what the very fine fabric needs.

  8. I’m in, just need to sort my pledge out. What a wonderful response to a great cause.

  9. This is such a wonderful initiative Karen and so brilliant that it’s already achieved your goal. I am sad that I can’t make a pledge as I’m travelling in the US and UK constantly between now and the 10 September and will be separated from my beloved Janome. I know exactly what I would make though! And will be making a donation as soon as I get my hands on my UK bank cards! Well done again.

  10. Will be glad to take part in this. Have been making a Colette Aster as part of the blog sewalong but have run over the deadline, so It’ll be great to continue with it and take part in this.

How brilliant of you to combine these two passions, publishing and sewing! I come from a publishing background too (children’s non-fiction) and I think this is a fab idea and a really great cause. I’m pledging and planning my make now. Count me in!

Such a fantastic idea, and congratulations on inspiring so many pledges. I’ve started mine – my first coat!

I’ve finally got round to making my pledge. These are two things close to my heart – literacy and sewing. I was a primary teacher for many years specialising in the teaching of reading. And sewing – something I have been doing since my ‘Nana’ taught me on her old treadle. Also when I think of the great pleasure I’ve had from reading throughout my life I want others to know that feeling. I will post a pic of my outfit as soon as it’s finished
